Longhorn Village Update Regarding Recent Wildfires

On behalf of the staff and residents at Longhorn Village, we’d like to extend our thoughts and prayers to our neighbors in Steiner Ranch who have been affected by the recent wildfires. We’d also like to express our sincerest appreciation to the police, fire and EMS personnel who have worked so diligently to minimize the potential impact of this tragedy.

Our community has worked hand in hand with law enforcement authorities to monitor the status of the wildfires and to respond accordingly based on their safety recommendations. Throughout this entire time period, our first and foremost priority was the safety of each and every resident and employee on the Longhorn Village campus. We are pleased to report that there was not a single health concern relating to the wildfire response efforts within the community.

During the wildfires, our entire team was working diligently to follow our crisis contingency plan, and the majority of our communication was directed toward residents, staff and law enforcement authorities. Thankfully, our residents and staff were able to share ongoing updates with friends and family via cell phone and other modes of communication to prevent any unnecessary concern or confusion.

Now that our day-to-day operations have returned to normal, we wanted to provide a brief recap of the steps that were taken by our residents and staff to ensure a positive outcome despite very trying conditions.

• Communication was immediately established with the Travis County Emergency Operations Command Center and maintained throughout the wildfires.
• All Health Care Residents were immediately evaluated for any health care needs, supplies, and medications to make certain that we had enough to remain in place for several days.
• Independent Living Residents that had recently returned from the hospital or who had a marginal to high possibility of needing health care were relocated to the Health Center.
• Fuel in the emergency generators was monitored regularly to make certain we never dipped below 50 percent capacity, which is needed to operate the critical systems in the Health Center and to provide certain services to the Independent Living Residents.
• Staff moved from floor to floor in Independent Living to determine if any Residents were in need of assistance.
• Preparations were made for emergency food distribution to all Residents.
• Our emergency call system continued to function and the nurses were able to respond to any emergency call in any of our buildings throughout the wildfires.
• With limited staff we were able to answer phone calls and reassure the families calling in that their loved ones were okay.
• 24 hour-per-day administrative services were arranged to ensure that all resident needs were accommodated.

The Longhorn Village family looks forward to contributing to the relief efforts that have been coordinated already for the families impacted by the wildfires, and we are proud to be part of a community that responds so quickly with kindness and generosity during times of need.
